The most important convention regulating and preventing marine pollution by ships is the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). Additionally, the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC), provides a global framework for international co-operation against marine pollution.

In line with an increasing awareness of environmental impact, the requirements for efficiency, quality, safety and training have become ever more stringent. Danaos Corporation shares the commitment to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment for the community, through preventive as well as remedial action. Indeed, our fleet systematically complies with or exceeds environmental laws and regulations.

The implementation of a robust Environmental Management System integrating environmental issues with company operations, means that Danaos Corporation personnel understand, action and support EMS. Further, our contribution to tackling global warming includes advanced solutions such as electronic engine management designed to optimize fuel efficiency while reducing emissions. Such systems are gradually becoming standard specification on our newbuildings.

The Danaos membership of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA) coupled with our Manager's ISO 14001/2004 certification are a testimony to the culture of environmental Best Practices prevailing throughout our organization.
